“1863”

from 250,00$

Product Details

Slavery officially ended in 1863 when Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Yet the question remains: what did freedom truly mean in its aftermath? As part of a three-piece series titled Emancipated?, this work features the text of the Emancipation Proclamation emblazoned across the face of an individual—one of three portraits from three different centuries. “1863” confronts the tension between the promise of liberation and the realities that followed, challenging the notion of emancipation as an endpoint rather than the beginning of a struggle still unfolding.
